SALT RIVER PIMA-MARICOPA INDIAN COMMUNITY, Ariz. -- Two people are in custody in connection with a Sunday morning shooting on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, police said.

Shortly before 3 a.m., gunfire erupted in a neighborhood near Alma School Road and Montecito Avenue.

Tribal police and Scottsdale police responded.

"When officers arrived, they did see gunshots," said Vicente Cendejas, a detective with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Police Department. "At that time, they secured the area and waited for other units to arrive."

Shots were then fired at the officers, who took cover.

A police chopper flew over the scene and officers told residents to stay in their homes. At the time, police were not sure how many shooters were involved.

"At times like this, you should always lock your doors and turn your lights on,” Det. Cendejas said.

Police said no one was shot.
