MESA, Ariz. -- An elderly man was pronounced dead Thursday after he apparently went unconscious during his flight to Phoenix.

Mesa police said Richard L. Nootz, 81, of Lincoln, Neb., was flying to the Valley to meet his family for the holidays.

About 11:56 a.m., the Mesa Fire and Medical Department responded to the Allegiant Air flight at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport for a report of a medical emergency.

Nootz was found unconscious prior to landing, according to Mesa fire Capt. Forrest Smith.

Smith said CPR was not performed and Nootz was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of death had not been determined Thursday, but police said the man's death did not appear suspicious.
