TEMPE, Ariz. -- Department of Public Safety officers are investigating fatal car-pedestrian accident on the U.S. 60 near Dobson Road.

It happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

DPS says Christopher M. Sampson, 32, of Chandler, was walking along the U.S. 60 when he was struck by a car.

"We received a call that he was walking on the ramp," says Sgt. Chris Nelson of DPS. "However, the collision took place on the main road, on the U.S. 60, adjacent to the Dobson off-ramp. So it appears that he was in the area of the shoulder or the number five lane when he was struck by the vehicle."

Sampson was declared dead at the scene.

The freeway was not shut down, but two lanes were restricted. All lanes have now reopened.

Investigators are looking into why Sampson was walking on the freeway.
