SUN CITY WEST, Ariz. -- Investigators believe a road rage incident led to a stabbing outside a pharmacy in Sun City West Tuesday afternoon.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office responded to the CVS Pharmacy at R.H. Johnson and Meeker boulevards at about 3 p.m. for a report of a stabbing.

Deputies found a 50-year-old man in the parking lot near his Smart Car. He had received a knife wound to his stomach and a slashing wound to his arm. He was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not considered life-threatening.

The man had been stabbed by a 72-year-old man driving a Chevy HHR, according to Deputy Joaquin Enriquez. That man had left the scene before deputies arrived.

Investigators said it appears the stabbing stemmed from a road rage incident that had occurred at the intersection. While stopped at the light, the 50-year-old man got out of his Smart Car and pulled the 72-year-old from his vehicle, according to Enriquez. He then threw the older man to the ground and began attacking him. The 72-year-old man pulled a knife and stabbed his attacker then drove away.

Witnesses obtained the man's license plate and deputies went to his home.

Sheriff's detectives took over the investigation and have determined that the 50-year-old stabbing victim is the suspect in this case.

The case is still under investigation, but the suspect could face assault charges.

The names of the men haven't been released.
