PEORIA, Ariz. -- Volunteers with the Peoria Police Department are handing out report cards to shoppers, grading people on whether they leave their car vulnerable to thieves.
"I think it's a good idea," one shopper said.
Patrol volunteers visit parking lots full of cars looking out for anyone who leaves their gifts in sight, obvious for anyone to see.
Another common mistake volunteers say people make is leaving their mail in the front seat.
"Your home address is in sight and if they know you're here and not home, it may not be a vehicle break in but a house invasion," said patrol volunteer Mike Davis.
The volunteers will hand out several hundred report cards on any given day, leaving notes to drivers on whether they're doing a good or bad job protecting their valuables.
