Police seek suspect in deadly shooting at Phoenix apartmentPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are searching for the person who shot and killed a man when an apparent domestic situation took a violent turn Thursday morning.
It happened at about 7 a.m. inside an apartment in the area of 23rd Avenue and Heatherbrae Drive, a few blocks north of Indian School Road.
Officers found the victim critically wounded. The suspect, Kheylon T. Cunningham, 28, had fled the scene on foot prior to the officers' arrival.
It was originally thought that the victim was a woman, but Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said the victim is Lemuel Warren, 19. He was shot in the chest.
Warren was transported to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries, making this a murder investigation.
Two other adults, an infant and a 6-year-old were also in the apartment, but they were not hurt. Crump said one of the victims, a female in the home, had a relationship with the suspect and this appears to be part of the motive in the shooting.
SWAT officers converged on an apartment at 23rd and Glenrosa avenues shortly before 9 a.m. as they searched for Cunningham, but they were not able to find him.
Cunningham is described as a black male, 5 feet 8 inches tall, 185 pounds with scarring around his left eye. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and was armed with a handgun. He was last seen heading southbound from the scene.
The suspect is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Phoenix Police Department or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
