MESA, Ariz. – A body found in a Mesa dumpster on Friday has been identified as a 14-year-old girl.

Mesa police officers responded to the Sun Garden Apartments near Horne and Brown Road at about 12:30 a.m. after two women digging through the dumpster for aluminum cans discovered the body.

"Homicide detectives responded to the scene and began their investigation into this obviously suspicious death," Sgt. Tony Landato said.

On Monday, police identified the victim as Claudia Ann Lucero. She was a student at Westwood High School.

Landato said the teen was last seen at approximately 6:30 a.m. Thursday at her home in Mesa. He said the girl's mother reported her as a possible runaway at 10 p.m.

No arrests have been made, but investigators are pursuing all leads.

Anyone with information that could help with the investigation is asked to call Mesa police at 480-644-2211 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
