MESA, Ariz. -- Police are investigating after somebody discovered a body in a dumpster.

The dumpster is at an apartment complex near Horne and Brown Road.

Police say the death is suspicious.

The investigation began early Friday morning when two women stumbled on the body while they were digging through the dumpster for aluminum cans.

A young resident at the apartment complex said that the women frantically ran to her apartment and asked to use the phone to call police to report the body.

"They screamed like really loud, like a horrific scream," said Kenya Braxton. "Then I was just waiting in silence and then I heard footsteps running up my stairs and they knocked on my door screaming and they were screaming and crying and they said there was a dead body in a trash dumpster."

Braxton said she did not want to believe the story.

"But then when the cops came and they put up the yellow tape they confirmed there were a body in there I got really scared," said Braxton.

Police questioned some residents about whether they saw anything suspicious. But they aren't saying much else.

"We don't know the circumstances around it though," said Det. Diana Williams with the Mesa Police Dept. "We don't know how long the body has been here. If the incident actually occurred here or who even is responsible for this."
