FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) -- A Flagstaff hotel is gearing up for the holiday season and the New Year by hoisting the city's "Great Pinecone" to the top of its historic building.

The glistening pinecone will be installed above the Weatherford Hotel Saturday. It will be the centerpiece of the city's New Year's Eve celebration when it drops at the stroke of midnight to mark the New Year.

The 70-pound, 7-foot lighted aluminum pinecone also drops like the ball in New York's Times Square at 10 p.m. to mark that's city's celebrations.

The hotel began the tradition in 1999.

Weatherford Hotel owner Sam Green says the giant pinecone and holiday music played from the hotel's balconies help put the city's shoppers in a festive spirit.
