TUCSON, Ariz. – An 18-year-old man is facing a child abuse charge after Tucson police said he "intentionally" dropped his infant daughter.

Anthony Esparza was booked into the Pima County Jail for one count of child abuse.

Tucson police officers responded to Kino Hospital early Tuesday morning regarding a 2-month-old baby who had been brought in with serious life-threatening injuries.

Sgt. Chris Widmer said the infant was brought to the hospital by her parents. She was transferred to the University of Arizona Medical Center due to the serious nature of her injuries.

Detectives from the Dependent Child Unit began an investigation.

"The investigation revealed that the baby was intentionally dropped by the father causing serious head trauma," Widmer said in a news release.

The baby remains in the hospital in critical condition.
