EVIT culinary students prepare Thanksgiving goods for public

MESA, Ariz. -- Students at East Valley Institute of Technology's (EVIT) culinary arts and commercial baking program are busy preparing baked goods and other foods before Thanksgiving.

About 180 students are helping bake and cook goods, including apple pie, apple cranberry pie, pumpkin pie, banana bread, cranberry orange loaves, brownies, pumpkin bars, white rolls, wheat rolls, smoked turkeys, dry stuffing and cranberry sauce.

Orders stopped last Wednesday, but the program goes on every year and the community can buy goods from the EVIT culinary website year-round.

"This is a great lesson for the kids," said Chef Michael Turcotte, executive chef instructor of the program. "They’re learning how to do mass production and they're also learning how to do a retail-style bakery."

Although orders have stopped, EVIT's culinary program sells any items they made too many of or that were never purchased to the public.
