PHOENIX -- Two people were killed in a head-on crash in the West Valley Saturday night.

Phoenix police said two SUVs were involved in a collision on 83rd Avenue just south of Buckeye Road at approximately 6:40 p.m.

According to Sgt. Tommy Thompson, a 1999 Ford Expedition traveling northbound on 83rd Avenue at a high rate of speed crossed over the center line and collided head-on with a southbound 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe at Pomo Street.

The driver of the Expedition, Francisco Carranza Sanchez, 50, and the driver of the Tahoe, Miriam Gonzalez, 41, both died at the scene.

Following the collision, another southbound vehicle collided with the two SUVs. The occupants of that vehicle did not receive life-threatening injuries.

Thompson said investigators learned that the Expedition had been involved in another collision and fled that scene just prior to the fatal collision.

The case is ongoing.
