Phoenix in Top Ten for MillennialsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX-- The Valley of The Sun is the place to be for 'Millennials', a slang term for a demographic group also dubbed "Generation Y".
The global social news network, Vocativ, names Phoenix number ten in its new list of "35 Best Cities For People Under 35".
"Millennials are looking for unique experiences. They don't want samey-samey. They want to go to a unique restaurant or be the first to find out about a new chef," said Kimber Lanning, owner of Stinkweeds Record Exchange and director of Local First AZ.
The study searched for cities with the lowest cost of rent, gas, transportation and highest public transportation ridership.
"Phoenix is becoming a very hip and very cool community, so reports like this confirm what we already know about our community," said Barry Broome, CEO of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council. "Smaller homes, tighter density, access to public transportation are important to young professionals coming out of the universities," said Broome.
Vocativ also looked at factors like which cities have the cheapest beer and cigarettes along with the most music venues, vintage clothing stores, and coffee shops, because millennials don't want a cookie-cutter experience, but rather a connection.
"When people feel connected to the place, they feel proud of the place they live," said Lanning.
Tucson also made the list at number 14. Portland came in number one with Austin and San Francisco close behind.
