TEMPE, Ariz. -- A suspected bank robber tried to escape in a cab before boarding a city bus and changing clothes in an attempt to elude police.

According to investigators, the suspect took a cab to the Bank of America at Southern Avenue and McClintock Drive in Tempe Saturday.

Investigators said he gave the teller a note demanding money and left the bank with an unknown amount of cash.

The suspect returned to the cab, but the driver refused to take him anywhere. The suspect, who has not been identified, then got on a bus and tried to change his appearance.

"As he's on the bus, he is trying to talk to people at the rear of the bus about changing clothes, trying to give them money in exchange for clothing," Tempe police Lt. Jeff Glover said.

The suspect got off the bus and bought new clothes at a Wal-Mart. Despite the wardrobe change, officers spotted him on a street nearby and arrested him without further incident.
