PHOENIX - Unusually heavy traffic is expected along freeway routes in the West Valley Sunday afternoon and evening as fans head to and from events at Phoenix International Raceway, along with an Arizona Cardinals game and a concert at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale.
The heaviest traffic is expected on Interstate 10 and Loop 101 in the early afternoon, and again when the two largest events end about 5:30 p.m.
Drivers are encouraged to allow plenty of extra travel time for westbound travel on I-10 and on Loop 101, and get to the event venues well ahead of their scheduled start times. The AdvoCare 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Phoenix International Raceway, and the Arizona Cardinals-Houston Texans game at University of Phoenix Stadium is scheduled to kick off at 2:25 p.m.
Very heavy traffic is expected again as the football game and race end between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., shortly before the 6 p.m. scheduled start of the Winter Jam 2013 Tour Spectacular at Jobing.com Arena.
Tips to minimize delays during the Sunday events

* Arrive early, and expect extended travel times before and after Sunday's events.

* NASCAR fans should remember that their parking pass determines which exits to take from I-10 to the race. Fans without passes must exit at Litchfield Road or Estrella Parkway.

* Due to expected race day traffic, fans should consider using the park & ride lot at the Ak-Chin Pavilion, two blocks north of I-10 on 83rd Avenue. A shuttle will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., free of charge to fans with PIR-issued parking passes and $7 for others.

*  Drivers leaving University of Phoenix Stadium and Jobing.com Arena are advised to head north on Loop 101 to avoid heavy traffic and delays on southbound Loop 101 and on I-10.

No major closures this weekend

Drivers will not encounter any freeway-construction closures in the Phoenix area this weekend, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. While no major restrictions are scheduled, drivers are being asked to plan ahead and be prepared for heavier traffic conditions along Interstate 10 and Loop 101 in the West Valley on Sunday due to sports and concert events.
