LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- Authorities are working to locate a man who allegedly abandoned a woman and child in the desert while trying to smuggle marijuana.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said early Tuesday morning agents at the I-25 traffic checkpoint outside of Las Cruces stopped a vehicle for inspection.

The driver refused to comply and sped away into the desert.

Agents eventually found the vehicle perched on the edge of a wash.

Inside the vehicle agents found a woman, a small child, and 215 pounds of marijuana.

The woman told agents that the driver had fled the vehicle and ran off into the desert.

Agents searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

The Drug Enforcement Administration was notified and took custody of the marijuana.

Authorities continue to try to locate the driver.
