PHOENIX -- Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents have seized rifles, ammunition and marijuana over the past two weeks.

Last week, agents stopped a vehicle near Stanfield, Ariz., and discovered five long-arm weapons, ammunition, marijuana and a stolen Border Patrol uniform.

Agents arrested the driver and seized the vehicle, contraband and weapons.

Agents recently apprehended several people attempting to smuggle narcotics and illegal immigrants into the United States. At the Interstate 19 checkpoint, agents arrested two U.S. citizens attempting to smuggle two Mexican nationals in the trunk of a vehicle. This smuggling method can prove to be fatal when occupants are unable to escape in an emergency.

This week, authorities said drugs were seized at the Highway 80 checkpoint two days in a row. In one incident, Border Patrol agents seized a recreational vehicle with more than 500 pounds of marijuana hidden in compartments.

The next day, agents stopped a Chrysler van carrying more than 60 pounds of marijuana hidden inside a false roof compartment.
