A look at ASU single season records that could be broken

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX -- Arizona State's season continues to roll, following their 55-21 win over Washington State.

Sitting at 6-2 with a 4-1 conference record, the Sun Devils sit atop the Pac-12 South division. They also have several players who are closing in on some significant single-season school records.

With a bowl game now a virtual certainty, we project how these records could fall in ASU's 13-game season. This could increase to 14 should ASU hold on to win the South division, but with that unknown, we will use a 13-game slate for projection purposes.

Total Touchdowns: Current record - 22 (Whizzer White, 1950)

Marion Grice was held out of the endzone for the first time in 11 games against Washington State, but he still is primed to break this record. With 18 scores through eight games, he is already tied with Cameron Marshall's 2011 season for fourth-best in school history. Should Grice's pace hold, Grice will finish with 29 touchdowns, which would break Toby Gerhart's Pac-12 record.

All Purpose Yards: Current record - 2,065 (Whizzer White, 1950)

Thanks to Grice's role as the primary kickoff returner, he can also top White in another major category. Through eight games, Grice has 1,298 all purpose yards (647 rushing, 333 receiving, 318 on returns), putting him on pace for 2,109.

Points: Current record - 136 (Whizzer White, 1950)

Grice should easily pass this mark, as he already has 108 on the year, putting him on pace for 175. However, White played just 10 games that year, so Grice is currently trailing the points-per-game mark at 13.6 to 13.5.

Passing Yards: Current record - 4,036 (Brock Osweiler, 2011)

Taylor Kelly now has 2,511 through eight games. At his current pace he will break the record in the bowl (4,080).

Passing Touchdown: Current record - 30 (Andrew Walter, 2004)

Kelly has 23 through eight games, putting him on pace to shatter the record by the bowl game with 37.

Total Offense: Current record - 4,126 (Brock Osweiler, 2011)

Being a capable runner, Kelly has added 315 yards rushing to the offensive mix. That gives him 2,826 yards of total offense this year, putting him on pace for 4,592. Kelly has already topped Osweiler's record with his seventh game of over 300 yards of total offense in a season.

Receptions: Current record - 87 (Shaun McDonald, 2002)

Jaelen Strong was in prime position to crush this mark, but with just seven catches over his last two games, he has fallen off. He is now on pace for 80 in 13 games, so strong efforts over the next few weeks will get him back on track.

Receiving Yards: Current record - 1,405 (Shaun McDonald, 2002)

Once again, Strong's recent injury-induced "slide" has taken him off his once torrid pace. Strong is on pace for 1,170 yards through 13 games.

Field Goals Made - Current record - 28 (Luis Zendejas, 1983)

True freshman Zane Gonzalez has made 13 consecutive kicks, giving him 17 makes through eight weeks. That puts him on a pace of just over 27 for the year, so he will need a very slight increase in pace to top Zendejas.
