SUPERIOR, Ariz. -- A Pinal County man is fortunate to be alive after he was shot and beaten during an alleged drug deal.

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said their detectives were asked to assist the Superior Police Department with a shooting investigation last Saturday.

According to PCSO, a 40-year-old man had to be transported to a Valley hospital after he was shot in the neck and severely beaten.

Detectives learned that the man had also been the victim of a robbery a few days prior.

During the course of their investigation, authorities learned that after the robbery the suspects told the victim he needed to leave town.

Early last Saturday morning, two women arrived at the victim’s home and reportedly offered to sell him methamphetamines.

The victim reportedly drove the two women to a location in Superior where he was shot and beaten by several of the same people who had robbed him.

Following the attack, the suspects stole the victim’s truck and burned it in the desert.

The victim was able to walk home, and a friend of his called 911.

PCSO said they were eventually able to arrest Robert Villalobos, 26, in connection with the crime. He has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault, possession of a dangerous drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, and theft. He was also booked into jail for an outstanding parole violation.

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said the investigation remains open as detectives continue to interview other possible witnesses.

Babeu added that additional arrests are pending.
