PHOENIX -- Firefighters believe a 4-year-old boy is to blame for a North Phoenix apartment fire Monday night.

It started at a complex near 15th Street and Thunderbird Road around 7 p.m.

Fire crews say the boy was playing in a closet and that's where the flames started.

"The fire was isolated to a closet with some clothing and stuff in it, which was where the juvenile was playing with a lighter or some matches," said Capt. Wayde Kline of the Phoenix Fire Department.

"Apparently, this is, like, the second time in a couple of days that he's started a fire."

The sprinkler system in the apartment put out the flames before firefighters arrived.

Fire investigators referred the 4-year-old boy to a youth fire-setter program.

Three people have been displaced due to smoke and water damage, and are being assisted by the Phoenix Fire Crisis Unit. One woman was evaluated for smoke inhalation but refused transportation to the hospital.
