PHOENIX -- A recent string of deadly fires has prompted The Phoenix Fire Department to begin walking around some Valley neighborhoods in hope of raising awareness about fire danger.

Kelly Liebermann of the Phoenix Fire Department says about 50 firefighters and volunteers were on hand Tuesday morning for the cause. "We did have two house fires where there were fatalities," he says. "But now we're going to canvass this neighborhood and try to bring prevention."

An escape plan for your family is also vital. "Smoke detectors are part of it, but if you don't have a plan, a couple ways of egress, you could be stuck," he says. "People get into a panic situation. And what we worry about is them walking out into the smoke. It's not the fire that's killing people; it's the smoke inhalation."

Crews planned to hit at least 300 homes Tuesday, handing out pamphlets and educating residents.
