RED ROCK, Ariz. – A 20-year-old Red Rock man was arrested after he accidentally shot his girlfriend while trying to scare her with a gun, according to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.
Ramiro Delcid was booked into the Pinal County Jail for negligent homicide.
Delcid called 911 and reported the shooting, which occurred at Red Rock Feeding, 35301 S. Hollis Road, shortly before 7 p.m. Monday. Deputies and medical personnel responded to the location.
Delcid told homicide detectives that he was sitting in his company work truck with Dina Dicochea, 19. He said he unloaded his .38-caliber pistol and pointed it at his girlfriend in an attempt to scare her.
He then pulled the trigger thinking the gun was unloaded, but one bullet had remained in the weapon and Dicochea was shot in the chest, according to sheriff's office spokesman Tim Gaffney.
Dicochea was pronounced dead at the scene.
"This case is a tragic reminder of how quickly a life can be taken by those who handle firearms irresponsibly," Sheriff Paul Babeu said. "Ramiro took the life of his girlfriend because he thought it would be funny to scare her with a gun. His poor judgment and decision making took the life of this young woman with her entire life ahead."
