PHOENIX (AP) -- Immigration rights activists are hoping to attract thousands of people to a protest at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Phoenix.

Carlos Garcia of Puente Arizona says the Monday protest is aimed at stopping deportations for the day.

Most immigration proceedings are on hold during the partial federal government shutdown. However, the government continues to deport people.

Garcia acknowledges that protesters could be arrested.

A spokeswoman for ICE in Phoenix is on furlough because of the federal budget battle and could not be reached for comment Sunday.
