TEMPE, Ariz. -- Motorists on the US 60 had a pretty miserable commute Thursday evening after a crash closed down the westbound lanes for several hours.

The accident occurred at Priest Drive when DPS said a driver suffered a medical issue that caused him to hit another vehicle that had three people inside.

The crash left traffic backed up for miles. To combat the issue, DPS started turning vehicles around so they could exit the freeway via the on-ramps.

The driver who suffered the medical issue and the three people inside the other vehicle were all taken to the hospital.

The driver who caused the crash is in very critical condition and may not survive.

The three other individuals were released a short time later.

The westbound lanes eventually reopened just before 9:30 p.m.
