MESA, Ariz. -- The Mesa Fire Department confirmed Wednesday night that more than 40,000 residents were unable to access the 911 system.

The problem was with phone provider Century Link.

While landline calls were unable to get through, cellphones were able to make calls to 911.

Century Link reported that service was restored at 3:45 a.m. Thursday.

There’s no word on what exactly caused the problem.
