Valley man gets trike after nearly 2-year waitPosted: Updated:
GLENDALE, Ariz -- It's been nearly two years since Michael Ellison spent thousands for a brand-new custom bike. He has a passion for riding motorcycles and has been riding since he was a teenager. But his passion was brought to a halt a few years ago when his health deteriorated.
"I have cirrhosis of the liver," he said. "That's what I almost died from, liver failure back in August of 2007."
Doctors told Ellison that if he insisted on riding he should consider riding a three-wheel motorcycle called a trike, so Ellison set out for the perfect trike.
"This was a way of fulfilling that item on the bucket list," he said.
Ellison went to a bike shop called Knuckle Head Cycles near downtown Glendale and met with the shop's owner, Joe Watts, who agreed to build Ellison a custom-made Trike for around $12,000 and claimed it would be ready in four to six weeks.
"The anticipation was like Christmas morning for me and this is something I just I, it's been multiple letdowns," Ellison said.
That's because six weeks turned into nearly two years, but the Trike that Ellison paid for was never delivered to him.
"I'm getting a little panicked here," he said. "I don't know how much longer I can get onto a Trike and actually do the kind of riding that I actually want to accomplish on my bucket list."
3 On Your Side tried contacting Watts, but he never called us back. So, we went to his shop. After all, he took $12,000 and never delivered that Trike.
Employees said Watts wasn't in, but he did call us right back. Watts admitted it’s taken a long time to build Ellison's Trike and claims some personal issues prevented him from delivering it.
However, after 3 On Your Side's involvement, Watts made good by finally delivering the Trike.
Ellison said he's proud of the Trike and wonders if he ever would have received it without 3 On Your Side's help.
"It’s a miracle," he said.
