GLENDALE, Ariz. – A driver involved in a high-speed chase through the West Valley on Sunday was taken into custody.

Michael L. Rodriguez, 35, was booked for unlawful flight and being a prohibited possessor after he was found with a weapon.

Glendale police said it started when officers thought Rodriguez may have kidnapped someone.

A Phoenix police officer spotted his white pickup truck and tried to stop the vehicle, but Rodriguez fled.

Police pursued the suspect vehicle through Glendale and Peoria, reaching speeds up to 85 mph, according to Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos.

Once a police helicopter was launched, officers on the ground backed off and Rodriguez stopped at an apartment complex near 67th Avenue and McDowell Road. He and a female passenger fled from the scene.

Police found them hiding in a vehicle in the complex's parking lot and took them into custody.

Police said Rodriguez has a criminal background.
