GILBERT, Ariz. -- The three pit bulls that mauled a 2-year-old boy to death on Sunday at his baby sitter's home in Gilbert have been euthanized, according to a spokeswoman for Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.

A field enforcement supervisor for Maricopa County Animal Care and Control spoke with the owner of the dogs at the hospital. She agreed to immediately give up the dogs and have them put to sleep.

The owner, who was also injured in the attack, told the field supervisor she understands the severity of the situation and the unpredictable temperament of her dogs.

The dogs were euthanized Tuesday afternoon. Their remains will be sent to a lab for rabies testing and the results are expected by the end of week.

There is one dog that was not euthanized and will be returned to the owner. That dog is the mother of the three other pit bulls and was not involved in the incident, according to the owner.

That dog came to the shelter spayed so it will not have any more puppies.
