PAYSON, Ariz. -- A Department of Public Safety Officer was shot several times during a traffic stop over the weekend.

The incident happened after 10 p.m. Saturday just south of Payson.

The DPS officer pulled over a white vehicle for a traffic stop. During that traffic stop, a suspect, now identified as Cody Archuleta, 22, of Tempe, shot the officer multiple times and fled the scene.

After being shot, that DPS officer drove himself to a local hospital in Payson and was then air-lifted to a hospital in the Phoenix area.

Officers from DPS, Gila County Sheriff's Office  and the Payson Police Department pursued the Archuleta's vehicle for about 40 miles along SR87, outside of Payson.

The pursuit finally ended in a field near Clints Well, where Archuleta ran from the vehicle. During that foot chase, there was an exchange of gunfire.

Officers ended up finding Archuleta dead in the field with a gunshot wound to the head. It's believed that the gunshot wound to the head may have been self-inflicted.

No information about Archuleta was immediately available.

The DPS officer who was shot during the traffic stop was last reported to be doing well. DPS spokesman Bart Graves said he planned to release the name of the wounded officer some time Monday.
