PHOENIX (AP) -- Gov. Jan Brewer has issued an executive order renaming the state's new Common Core academic standards and reaffirming that Arizona is acting independently from the federal government.

Friday's order comes just days after Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal proposed the name change while saying he too supports the standards. The state Board of Education adopted Common Core in 2010.

Common Core standards have been adopted by 46 states. But they have drawn criticism from right-wing Republican activists who contend they're being foisted on states by the federal government. Opponents of the standards fought their implementation in the state Legislature during the session that ended in June.

The state's academic standards will now be called "Arizona's College and Career Ready Standards."
