SUN CITY, Ariz. – A fatal crash closed eastbound US 60, also known as Grand Avenue, at 103rd Avenue in Sun City for several hours Friday morning.
According to the Department of Public Safety, a man, now identified as Harley W. Wallace, 24, of Litchfield Park, was crossing the street in the middle of the road when he was hit by a blue van going about 45 mph. Wallace died instantly.
It happened at about 5 a.m., when it was still dark.
Video from the scene showed that blue van with what appeared to be a dent in the hood.
DPS officers questioned the driver of the van, Fernando Ruiz Calzada, 34, but they do not believe he was impaired in any way at the time of the crash, nor do they think "inappropriate speed" was a factor. Calzada told investigators that he tried to stop, but by the time he saw Wallace, it was too late.
Investigators have not released any information about that victim, but an officer on the scene told 3TV's Javier Soto that they do not believe this was a suicide. That officer said Wallace had just bought a sandwich and was eating it while he was walking.
The closure was lifted at 8:30 a.m., as the morning rush hour was winding down.
