TUCSON, Ariz. -- Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents stopped several attempts of human and drug smuggling passing through southern Arizona immigration checkpoints during the past week.

During an immigration inspection last week, a canine team from the Wilcox Border Patrol Station working at the State Route 90 checkpoint north of Whetstone, Ariz., asked for a second inspection of a vehicle passing through. Agents later discovered two illegal immigrants being transported in the trunk of the vehicle by a U.S. citizen who now faces federal prosecution for human smuggling.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, Wilcox Station agents at the same checkpoint arrested three illegal immigrants and a U.S. citizen. The driver attempted to flee during the immigration inspection, but the vehicle was stopped.

Wilcox Station agents at the State Route 80 checkpoint north of Tombstone, Ariz., arrested a U.S. citizen carrying 182 bricks of marijuana valued at $140,850 on the morning of Monday, Sept. 16. The marijuana was hidden in compartments in the vehicle. Agents seized the vehicle and the driver faces federal prosecution for drug smuggling.

Checkpoints throughout southern Arizona help agents stop drug and human smuggling attempts into the United States. The canine teams assisting at the checkpoints improve agents’ effectiveness when finding smugglers.
