AVONDALE, Ariz. -- An Avondale police officer was shot in the face Saturday evening, according to Sergeant Brandon Busse with the Avondale Police Department.

The officer was airlifted to a hospital and is expected to survive.

Sgt. Busse said the person suspected of shooting the officer, 27-year-old RT McGinty, was also shot and has died.

It's unclear whether McGinty was shot by the wounded officer or another officer. McGinty was also airlifted to a hospital, according to police.

The shooting occurred around an arts festival on Western Avenue near 3rd Street and Rose Lane, close to a residential area. Police were patrolling the festival for security.

McGinty was riding a bicycle and started firing at officers for an unknown reason.

The circumstances are still under investigation.
