Over a million Arizonans won't know the pleasure of serving up a delicious breakfast for their family, grocery shopping for necessities, or joyfully picking up a grandchild because of their chronic daily pain.
This issue is so important in our state that Governor Jan Brewer signed a proclamation for Pain Awareness Month. And the leading experts in pain management will gather in Scottsdale at the Power of Pain Foundation's 7th Annual P.A.I.N. Summit. There providers and patients hear first-hand about the latest information on pain care and management.
Chronic pain is a condition that patients may simply accept as something they have to bear, but today like never before there is so much hope for people suffering from the physical and emotional distress of chronic pain.
September brings awareness to this serious medical condition, its impact on our communities; and the importance of exhibiting understanding and providing access to care for the mothers, fathers, spouses-everyone-who grapples with chronic pain.
The U.S. Institute of Medicine says that, approximately 100 million people in the United States are affected by chronic pain every year. That number is more than the number of Americans who are affected by cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined.
Pain costs this country $635 billion yearly in medical treatment expenses and lost productivity. Patients simply want to get the treatment they need to return to work and live normal lives. They have families, loved ones, and responsibilities that are difficult to juggle while battling chronic pain.
The key to reducing such costs and improving the quality of life for patients is appropriate diagnosis, management of the condition, adherence to treatments, but first and foremost access to needed care.
