SURPRISE, Ariz. – A Valley man has reached a great milestone in his life. He celebrated his 100th birthday Thursday, Sept. 12, on "Good Morning! Arizona."

Instead of just celebrating, Art Molay spent his birthday volunteering at St. Mary’s Food Bank in Surprise.

Molay has helped at the food bank for more than 10 years and has logged in 5,000 hours of volunteer time. On his birthday, he packaged meals for kids’ lunches.

“I like to help people, that’s about the size of it. And it gives me something to do, a name in life,” Molay said when asked why he likes to volunteer.

Molay was born in New Jersey and retired in Arizona in his 60s after a long career as a dentist.

Molay’s friends at the food bank celebrated his 100th birthday with cake and decorated with photos and other keepsakes spanning Molay’s life.

Molay was also presented with a surprise proclamation from Gov. Jan Brewer, which congratulated him on his special day.

“I’m really touched, that’s something,” Art said when given the recognition.

Molay’s friends at the food bank say he is always ready to work and arrives before everyone else.

“He’s a very special person. He’s loving and warm, and he’s very caring,” said Phyllis, Molay’s girlfriend. “I’m just so proud to have him in my life.”
