Tempe PD continuing "Safe & Sober" campaign this weekend with MCSO's helpPosted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Tempe police will be tackling alcohol-related crime this weekend as they continue their “Safe & Sober” campaign.
Tempe Police Chief Tom Ryff has requested the assistance of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office as they target offenses such underage drinking, loud parties, DUIs, and other violent crimes.
“I plan to continue these efforts into the foreseeable future, or until we get a handle on the alcohol-related violence,” said Chief Ryff. “This is an exciting time in Tempe, and we want everyone to feel welcome and safe in our community. Our primary goal is straitforward: Be responsible. Be lawful. Be safe.”
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said if you're going be in Tempe this weekend you can expect to see a large law enforcement presence.
“If the law enforcement response looks over the top it is, because these parties are over the top,” said Arpaio. “What’s going on during these off-campus drunk fests is nothing to laugh at. Already serious injuries have occurred and it won’t be long before somebody ends up dead.”
Tempe police announced their Safe & Sober campaign back in August before the start of school.
This weekend’s operation is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. on Thursday.
