PHOENIX -- Owners of a chain of Mexican food restaurants in the Phoenix area are offering free food on Sept. 16 to show customers that their restaurants are safe and clean.

Customers will be able to visit any Arizona Federico's Mexican Food Restaurant that day for a free breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. or an early dinner between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Maricopa County health officials say at least 52 people were sickened after eating at a Federico's in Litchfield Park on July 23 and 24.

They're still trying to determine what items were contaminated with the E. coli bacteria. The infection causes vomiting, cramps and kidney failure in some cases.

"We wish everyone to understand and want to emphasize that the Federico's at Dysart and Camelback will continue to work closely with the County Health Department and have complied with their every request," said Federico's owner Isidro Araiza. "It, along with all of the Federico's locations, will continue to pass any Health Department inspection and maintain their confidence."

Federico's has 20 restaurants in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Sept. 16 is Mexican Independence Day.

Restaurant officials also announced Tuesday that they will donate 20 percent of Sept. 30's gross sales to the Arizona chapter of the National Kidney Foundation since E. coli impacts the kidneys.
