PHOENIX -- Phoenix police have identified a man who died following an officer-involved shooting Saturday evening.

At the time, police did not know whether Moses Baeza, 25, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or as a result of the shots fired by an officer.

On Monday, Sgt. Steve Martos said investigators have determined that Baeza died from the officer firing his weapon.

Officers responded to an area near 10th and Pierce streets at approximately 5:30 p.m. after they received several calls about a man shooting a gun in the air.

Martos said officers saw a gun in the suspect's hand as he started running southbound. Baeza ignored commands to drop the gun and pointed it at one of the officers.

The officer fired at the suspect.

Baeza fled and was later found dead in a yard.

Martos said detectives located shell casings in Baeza's possession from the earlier calls of shots fired.
