PHOENIX (AP) -- Phoenix police are investigating a suspect's death following an officer-involved shooting.

Officers responded to an area near 10th and Pierce Streets on Saturday evening after they received several calls about a man shooting a gun into the air.

Sgt. Steve Martos says officers saw a gun in the man's hand as he started running toward a group of people. The officers shouted to the man to drop the gun and one officer fired when the man ignored their orders.

The armed man fled and was later found dead in a front yard after the area was searched.

Martos says it's not clear whether the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or if he died as a result of the shots fired by the officer.

Investigators haven't identified the man.
