MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- A Mesa police car was recovered after it was stolen while officers responded to a call about a noisy party at an apartment complex.

Police Sgt. Tony Landato says two officers were at a nearby ambulance checking on a teen-ager being treated for inebriation early Sunday morning when a teen-ager got in the car and drive off.

One of the officers tried unsuccessfully to pull the boy from the car but lost his grip when it accelerated. Before leaving the scene, the stolen car hit a parked car and the ambulance.

According to Landato, officers found the stolen police car in a park several blocks away.

Landato says a 15-year-old boy found hiding in nearby bushes was arrested on charges that include theft of a vehicle and aggravated assault.

"Thankfully we're not here talking about a kid that went out there and got himself killed or an officer who was injured," said Sgt. Landato.
