MESA, Ariz. -- A teen was arrested early Sunday morning after he allegedly stole a police car in Mesa.

Mesa police said they were responding to a disturbance call in the area of Second Street and Mesa Drive at around 1 a.m. when the teenager jumped into the car and drove off.

According to police, the vehicle had a loaded assault rifle in the trunk at the time.

Officers chased the teen, but lost him a short time later.

They were eventually able to locate the vehicle with the help of a GPS device, but the teen wasn’t inside the car.

Police Sgt. Tony Landato says a 15-year-old boy found hiding in nearby bushes was arrested on charges that include theft of a vehicle.
