TEMPE, Ariz. -- High winds swept through Tempe on Friday, snapping and uprooting trees all over town.

A massive mesquite tree toppled in a neighborhood northeast of 56th Street and Ray Road, tearing out the root system and sending limbs crashing into the homeowner’s roof and pickup truck.

Dozens of curious onlookers came to see the huge tree as the family worked to chop off the branches and begin the cleanup. They had planned a holiday weekend up north but said instead they’ll be cleaning all weekend.

Uprooted trees and down limbs could be seen in streets all around Tempe.
