PHOENIX (AP) -- Two women are dead after a high-speed crash at a west Phoenix intersection and authorities say an impaired driver may have caused the accident.

It happened at 43rd Avenue and Indian School Road.

Phoenix police say a 28-year-old man driving at a high rate of speed collided with another vehicle carrying 35-year-old Nerty De Gutierrez and 29-year-old Elvia Gutierrez at about 1 p.m. Thursday.

The women were taken to the hospital where they died.

Police believe the man may have been impaired. He's being treated at a hospital and his name hasn't been released.

Police said charges are pending the man's release from the hospital.
