SAN LUIS, Ariz. -- A woman from Somerton, Ariz., was arrested Sunday by Customs and Border Protection officers at the Port of San Luis for allegedly attempting to smuggle nearly 47 pounds of methamphetamine and more than three pounds of heroin. The drugs were valued at almost $765K.

Officers were inspecting a Mitsubishi SUV, driven by 39-year-old Nancy Fidelina Meraz, when a CBP narcotics detection canine alerted officers to the vehicle’s gas tank. After the tank was removed for further inspection, officers discovered multiple packages of drugs inside.

The drugs and vehicle were seized. Meraz was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
