PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are trying to figure out why a man died after being tased by officers.

Miguel “Michael” Ruiz died Aug. 2, just a few days after the incident occurred.

Police have opened an internal investigation into what happened, and a witness video could be a key part of their analysis.

After Ruiz was tased on the roof of his apartment complex, you can see police dragging him down some stairs.

His father, a retired Los Angeles police officer, told 3TV that the incident didn’t have to happen.

“He was trying to cooperate and they wouldn't let him. I guess they just wanted to beat him,” said Ruiz’s father. "I don't know what these officers were thinking."

A spokesperson for Phoenix police said they are waiting on a toxicology report to determine if Ruiz was under the influence of drugs.
