MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police have arrested an alleged burglar while he was still at the scene of the crime.

It happened Tuesday morning at a strip mall near Stapley and Main Street in Mesa. Police say the would-be burglar broke into an air-conditioning unit on the roof, then went down through the vent into the Cricket store below.

Once there, he created quite a mess for employees to clean up, according to staffer Valeria Acosta.

“He tried to climb in through here, he took a piece of tile, while he was climbing down, most of the tiles came falling down so he went back up,” said Acosta.

The suspect then crawled next door to the smoke shop, but he had already set the alarm off at the Cricket store.

“He probably heard the alarm and got scared and went next door,” said Acosta.

Police found the man hiding in the smoke shop bathroom and sent the K-9 in to get him.

The burglar ended up not stealing a thing. Instead, he walked out with a pair of handcuffs, and a couple of bites from the police dog.
