PHOENIX -- The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is turning to the public for help finding the person responsible for killing an MCSO detention officer.

Silent Witness has been posting billboards around the Valley with a sketch of the suspect and a picture of the victim, 27-year-old Jorge Vargas.

Vargas was shot and killed last Thursday while in the driveway of his home near 91st Avenue and Lower Buckeye.

The billboards are designed to ensure that everyone in the Valley knows about the suspect.

“Billboards are 24/7, so we really hope somebody will see one of these billboards,” said Darren Burch with Silent Witness. “It will resonate, connect with them, and they will call and hopefully get a murderer off our streets.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.

A fundraiser will be held this weekend for Officer Vargas’ family.

A car wash will take place Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jimbo’s Restaurant near 51st Avenue and Cactus in Glendale.
