MESA, Ariz. – Police are searching for the driver who hit and killed a bicyclist in Mesa.

It happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Ray and Sossaman roads, just south of Loop 202.

According to police, a white SUV, possibly a 2003-2005 Saturn Vue, hit a bicyclist. The rider, a 68-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later identified him as Richard B. Welck.

Police believe both Welck, who was riding a three-wheeled bike like the one pictured above, and the white SUV were heading east on Ray Road from Sossaman Road at the time of crash. Investigators said it looks like the SUV hit Welck from behind.

The driver of the SUV fled the scene, leaving Welck to die. Police believe that driver is a white male. Officers searched the area but came up empty.

At this point, investigators do not have any information about the driver or his vehicle, but they say the SUV likely will have front-end damage on the passenger side.

If you have any information about this deadly wreck, call the Mesa Police Department at 480-644-2211.
