GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities in southern Arizona say a 36-year-old man is recovering from being shot in the buttocks by his 3-year-old son while they were target shooting in the desert with a .22-caliber rifle.
The Green Valley Fire District says the man drove himself and his 3-year-old son to an Interstate 19 exit and called 911 for help after the shooting occurred Monday afternoon.
The man was transported by ambulance to a Tucson hospital for treatment of his non-life threatening injury. The toddler was not injured.
The man's identity was not released.
"This incident illustrates the importance of using exceptional caution whenever children are allowed around guns," said battalion chief Tom Louis. "It can take only seconds for things to go very badly. Thankfully, this incident was relatively minor."
