EL MIRAGE, Ariz. -- El Mirage police said the suspect in a fatal hit and run was arrested Friday night after turning himself in to police.

James Alfred Fajardo, 33, surrendered to investigators at the 4th Avenue Jail and is now charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death or serious injury.

On Wednesday night, Fajardo’s truck allegedly struck 71-year-old James Atkins as he rode his bike near El Mirage and Cactus roads.

Fajardo reportedly fled the scene, but authorities found his unoccupied pickup truck with front end damage in a nearby neighborhood.

El Mirage Police says Fajardo was employed with the Arizona Department of Corrections. It's unknown in what capacity though.
